No Governing Body for OTT Platforms

In the year 2019, the government came up with the news of restricting the OTT Platforms for their content with some rules and guidelines. This must be known that there are laws to protect other platforms such as for the TV programming there are Cable Television Network rules, 1994. For films, there is Cinematograph Act, 1952, and such others. But there is no governing body created for OTT Platforms.

Self-Regulatory Code of OTT Platforms

On 15th September 2020, 15 different OTT Platforms like Netflix, Zee5, Amazon prime, ALTBalaji, etc. came up with a self-regulatory code. It was signed under IAMAI (Internet and Mobile Association of India). The guidelines which were introduced through this self-regulatory code were that there will be principles on the age-sensitive contents which are prohibited for a certain age of users, redressal of the complaint, and to categorize the content with a disclaimer. But the Information and Broadcasting Ministry didn’t accept this code and rejected it.

Release of Notification for Regulation by Government

On 9th November 2020, a notification was released stating the regulation and governance of the online streaming services in all platforms such as Netflix, Zee5, Amazon prime, ALTBalaji, etc. under the I&B Ministry which is headed by Prakash Javadekar, I&B Minister.

Why Censorship and Regularization of OTT Platforms

Censorship and regularization have been made on the platforms in order to keep a check on the content, to make it systematic, and to bear control over the content on these OTT Platforms. Still, the set of guidelines hasn't been released by the government for the decision of the censorship and regularization of the OTT Platforms.

How do the OTT Platforms get affected?

There is no issue for the audience with the regulations made on the OTT Platforms. The Regulations have just been made to keep a check on the content which is required in any and every field in order to maintain the systematic approach and control the content. This won’t affect how you are going to search your content and watch on the OTT Platform. There is no sharing of any confidential information of the user with the government regulations with anyone.

Everywhere and every time, there is a need for regulation and code of conduct in order to maintain a discipline and systemize the work, so is for OTT Platforms.
