PRANAB MUKHERJEE – THE BHARAT RATNA

In this article, we will know in detail about the 13th President of India, Pranab Mukherjee -  The Bharat Ratna. 

Pranab Mukherjee was born on 11th December 1935, in a Bengali Brahmin Family at Mirati. His father's name was Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee and his mother's name was Rajlakshmi Mukherjee. He was born with two siblings older than him, a sister named Annapurna Banarjee and Brother Piyush Mukherjee. Pranab Mukherjee was an Indian statesman. He had been in the political field for 5 decades and was a senior leader in the political party Indian National Congress. Before being elected as President of India, Pranab Mukherjee was the Union Finance Minister from the year 2009 to 2012. 




Pranab Mukherjee received Bharat Ratna from the next President of India, Ram Nath Kovind in the year 2019. He was always a much respected member of the party and his social circles as well. 

His political career began in the year 1969 after he got elected in the Rajya Sabha with the help of Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India. But Mukherjee was sidelined from the political party after the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984. Pranab Mukherjee made his own party named Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress, in the year 1989.

After the Rajiv Gandhi assassination in the year 1991, Pranab Mukherjee's career revived as the then Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao appointed him the head of the Planning Commission in 1991. After that in 1995, he was promoted to the position of Foreign Minister. When Pranab Mukherjee was asked about what he would pass on to the next generation with his legacy being a Financial Minister of India, he said, “As the [man] who prepared Indian diplomacy to address the challenges of a more globalized, interdependent and uncertain world.”

Also, he was appointed as Minister of Defence in the year 2004 by Manmohan Singh when the congress again came into power. He resigned from the political party in 2012 and secured the nomination through UPA for the President position of the country. Pranab Mukherjee defeated P.A. Sangma in the Presidential Election and won with 70 percent of the electoral college vote.

Pranab Mukherjee decided to leave the career in politics due to his health issues as he was in his old age and said no to re-election, thus left the Presidency for the country after which Ram Nath Kovind came into power as the President of India. On 25th July 2017, was his last date to be in politics and serve the country as the President of India.

Pranab Mukherjee has become the first former president of India who has addressed the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) event in June 2018.
